LOCAL HISTORY ROUNDTABLE

Come hang with some of Montclair’s most avid history buffs! This first meeting in several years will be an open discussion about topics that members would like to explore, a schedule for future meetings, and more. Free and open to the public. Location: Clark House, 108 Orange Road.
NUBIAN QUILTERS EXHIBIT
February 1-3 and February 8-10
Back by popular demand, the Nubian Heritage Quilters Guild, whose mission is to promote the legacy of African American quilting, will display their latest work in an exhibit titled Fabric of Our Lives: One Stitch in the Past to One Stitch in the Future. Their beautiful handcrafted quilts will be displayed throughout the Crane House Museum, along with demonstrations, a Children’s Corner, plus special exhibits of goddess dolls, artists’ trading cards, postcards and journal pages. Hours on Fridays and Saturdays are 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., and on Sundays are 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. The public is invited to the opening reception on Friday, February 1st from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The cost of admission is $5 per person. Children seven and under are free. Admission is free for Montclair Historical Society members. Location: Crane House Museum, 110 Orange Road
LOG CABIN SAMPLER QUILTING WORKSHOP

Log cabin quilts, popular during the 1800’s and early 1900’s, are a classic American quilt design. This workshop, taught by accomplished quilters from the Nubian Heritage Quilters Guild, offers the opportunity to explore exciting geometric design possibilities. Suitable for all levels, from beginners with basic sewing skills to experienced quilters. Class size is limited to ten so register early! Class fee is $ 40.00. Bring your own sewing machine; supplies list will be mailed after you register. Location: Clark House meeting room, 108 Orange Road, Montclair.
CRAZY QUILT WORKSHOP

Learn how to make a crazy quilt from the Victorian era. You will learn to use various hand embroidery stitches as well as machine stitches and fun embellishments to complete this lovely Victorian quilt. Experiment with different fabrics that were used in the 1800’s: velvet, silk, rayon and cotton. Suitable for beginners (with basic sewing skills) to experienced quilters. TRACING MONTCLAIR’S HISTORY THROUGH MAPS

Join Mike Farrelly, Montclair’s Township Historian and map maven extraordinaire, for some fascinating insights into what can be gleaned about Montclair’s past through the careful study of a succession of maps of Montclair. Featuring a look at the Historical Society’s latest acquisition (thanks to Bob Allcorn): a rare (probably one-of-a-kind) 1874 map of Essex County identifying the owners of most homes at the time. Free and open to the public. Location: Crane House Museum meeting room.
EASTER EGG HUNT
Saturday, March 15 2:00 to 4:00 PM
Families are invited to the Annual Spring Egg Hunt. Children ages three to five are invited from 2:00 to 3:00 PM and children ages six to eight are invited from 3:00 to 4:00 PM. Children are encouraged to bring their own basket to collect the eggs. Eggs will be hidden throughout the property, filled with special treats to celebrate the coming of spring. Every child will also receive a ticket worth 75 cents off in the Historical Society’s Museum Shop, which will be open for shopping. Advance registration is required but the event is free. Sponsored by the Speertown Kiwanis Club of Upper Montclair. Location: Crane House Museum grounds.
