CLARK HOUSE
|
The Clark House named for Dr. James Henry Clark, An Army surgeon during the Civil War, a Montclair resident, and a descendant of the signers of the Mayflower Compact and the Declaration of Independence, Clark House was built in 1894 by Dr. Clarks son, Dr. James Henry Clark, Jr. The land is occupied was a part of the original land grant to Azariah Crane in the late 17th century. It is representative of late 19th century Queen Ann style residential architecture in Montclair. Clark House was acquired in 1985 for its historic importance, its location immediately next door to Crane House Museum, and for greatly needed space. While the Crane House Museum serves as an exhibition center, Clark House serves as the Society's educational, research, and administrative complex, including the Albert Payson Terhune Library.
HISTORIC COUNTRY STORE
COUNTRY STORE
|
The Historic Country Store exhibits a rare collection (over 600 artifacts) of antique country store equipment and merchandise. A representation of the general store operated by Israel Crane, the Country Store is housed in a residence built by Nathaniel Crane, Israel's cousin, in 1818. It provides a good example of modest homes of that period.
Occupying the same space, the museum shop sells reproductions of historic items, handcrafts, cookbooks and other things that might have been sold in a 19th century country store.

COLONIAL GARDENS
| The Orange Road site which includes the Crane House Museum & Clark House was part of the original; 17th century land grant to Azariah Crane, Israel Crane's great great great grandfather. Israel Crane's wife Fanny Pierson Crane, was the daughter of a doctor and grew medical herbs such as feverfew and chamomile in the garden for home treatments, a reminder of those days, when doctors were miles away and prescription drugs were unavailable. Based on research, the gardens have been designed around herb, floral, produce, and leisure themes. Garden specials with historic interest include: bee balm, foxgloves, fraxinells, holly hock, alchemila, phlox, and yarrow.
