| The Montclair Historical Society,
a nonprofit volunteer organization, promotes preservation,
study and appreciation of local history. The Society was originally
founded in 1965 to save the Israel Crane House, a Federal
Revival style landmark home built by a local entrepreneur
in 1796. The Crane House has since become a centerpiece for
an enclave of historical buildings, furnishings and gardens,
classes in historic skills and activities, and tours for adults
and children. Since 1965, the Society has been bringing together
people interested in the history of Montclair and providing
facilities, materials and activities to further interest in
local history.
The Society’s mission is to cultivate a strong sense of community by engaging residents and visitors through programs, exhibits, and the conservation and interpretation of the Society’s historic sites and collections; and by promoting the preservation and adaptive reuse of Montclair’s buildings, structures and areas of historic significance (adopted February 2007).
