A Farm in Our Backyard

We’re thrilled to report that this September we’re breaking ground for a farm in the empty plot of land behind the Clark House.  It’s part of a youth farming program that teaches local high school students how to grow and sell vegetables at affordable prices in order to increase access to healthy foods in Montclair.  In the program’s inaugural year last year, six students grew almost 300 pounds of vegetables during a short season on 1,000 square feet of land on Miller Street owned by HOMECorp. With such a successful start, the group began looking for a second site with open land that could accommodate a small farm. Our property was perfect for their expansion. and for us, because it recalls the days when this area as primarily an agrarian society. The project is a collaboration of the Essex County 4-H, HOMECorp, Montclair Health Department, Montclair State University, TerraNoble Design and United Way of Northern New Jersey. We’re excited to be part of it!
